Solange Knowles - Don't Touch My Hair

Don’t Touch My Hair is a metaphoric song about the identity of a black woman. White people always want to touch African hair, because they find it interesting. Even though, they don’t mean it in a bad way, it can be quite insulting. Solange Knowles creates awareness about this with her song. Her message is that her hair is not just hair, it is a huge part of her identity.

The song consists of mostly metaphors and repetitions. I believe that Solange choose for this style, because she wanted to emphasize the meaning behind her words. She choose different angles to make the same point, which was: ‘Don’t mess with my identity, because my identity is mine.’

Besides comparing her hair to her identity, it is also possible that she gives her hair human attributes. I believe that she gives her ‘crown’, soul and pride human attributes as well. For example, it is physically impossible to touch ones soul or pride, but this song says otherwise.

Furthermore, it is very appealing how she repeats all of her sentences over and over again, so that the listener gets the message thoroughly. Every listener can get their own meaning out of this song and that makes it very universal. The best songs are universal, but also personal.
